How -to-Training guide for using the web browser for beginners-101

Part of basic computer training is learning to use the internet. Today you are going to learn about the web browser! How to use a web browser, what are the parts of the web browser and how to find your web browser on your or any computer.

1). How to Launch Web Browser - To start your web browser you need to do one of these two things! Double click on the  Internet Explorer Icon that has a big lower case 'e'.Internet Explorer
Or if you prefer (FF)FireFox........Firefox icon looks like this: cursor

Or

2) From the Start menu going to programs. Then select your web browser under the program list on the left hand side. Look for the ''E'' icon that says Internet Explorer. Then double click or single click on the Internet Explorer and patiently wait for a window to pop up. And now you are on the web! Congratulations!!

When your web browser starts it will immediately open a page that is set up as the starting page. Some people call it their home page!
At the VERY top of your screen is the Title bar.

web_browser_tool_bar

Next is the ADDRESS BAR where you write the name of the site you want to view.

You will hear people talk about website addresses all the time! For example, www.yahoo.com or FaceBook.com. To look up a particular site you will need to type in an asdress into the address bar.
Tip: You do not have to type "http://". Your browser software assumes you want to use the http protocol since you are using a Web browser. You don't have to mention it to most people either due to that reason! Your computer ALREADY knows that part!

Web address are also called URL's which stands for Uniform Resource Locators. You don't have to know the formal name - URL is fine! You enter that web address in that long window that has either 'address' or 'GO TO' mentioned in the web browser! You hit your enter button on your keyboard or the symbol right next to the address bar and OFF you go! Keep in mind some addresses have numbers, Dots (.), dashes (-), or underscores (_) and you will need to type those as well.

Next you will see what is called the BACK BUTTON

back button forward button

The first arrow is called the 'back button'. What do you do with the back button? YOU go BACK to where you were before - each click of the back button brings you back ONE page! The opposite arrow WELL it goes the opposite direction! That is called the forward button. It goes forward one page. MOST of the time you will use the back button on your web browser.
Also, when the forward button is greyed like the one in the icon picture above, it means you can’t go forward anymore.

Lets move to the rest of the address bar on your web browser.

refresh stop button

The first symbol in the next set is the capability button. We aren’t going to cover that today, and not all web browsers have this button.
You see the double arrow button that almost looks like it is going in a circular motion or a recycle logo? That is called the 'refresh button' or a lot of people call it RELOAD button. There are a couple of different instances in which you may use the refresh button within the web browser like if only some of the web page you are trying to view displays and some of it doesn't. Then this is one of a few options you could use to get a complete display of the web page.
You want the MOST up to date screen - hit the refresh button or reload button page in the browser bar!

Do you see the (X) button next? That is the STOP button! Click this stop button if you want to stop loading the current page. Some sites have pages that are very large and take a long time to load. The Stop button will help stop the loading of the page, and allow you to move backwards by hitting the back arrow button.

NEXT:
Home Button on your web browser
The HOUSE button takes you back to your home page! The home button returns you to your designated "home page" or 'start page'. The place you started when you clicked the Internet Explorer icon to open the web page at the beginning!

home page button

NEXT:
Menu Bar
In Internet Explorer, the different menus available are File, Edit, View, Favorites, Tools and Help.
Slide your mouse over one of the menu options (File, Edit, View, etc.).
The menu you've selected should be highlighted in blue or maybe another color but you will see that it is high lighted. Click the left mouse button once. A menu will slide down.
Slide your mouse over the item in the menu that you would like to select.
Click once with the left mouse button to select the item

NEXT:
Scroll Bars:
If you've ever been to a website that you had to "scroll down" to read something, then you've used the scroll bars. They're just navigational/directional aids.

FINALLY:

If you move all the way to the right of the title bar you will see something that should be familiar to you.

mininize_full_page_close_buttonsThe first is the minimize button. The next is the Maximize button. Then lastly, you have the close button.

Tips on speeding up your internet connection

Computer users sometimes ask: "How can I speed up my internet connection?" Well, there are several factors that can determine your connectivity speed to the internet. You may be limited by what Internet Service Provider (ISP) you're using, what type of service plan you're using, if you're on dial-up or broadband and even where your  location is.

In this post, I will outline a few relatively quick and easy things you can try that may help to improve your internet connection speed.
1).If you use FireFox, there's some tweaks you can do to help make webpages load a bit faster.

COMPUTER MUST KNOWS

When you own or use a computer, there are several important things to keep in mind. Some of these are basic common sense that we sometimes forget. They all are very important to know.

1. Use a surge protector to protect your computer and peripherals from voltage spikes that may occur due to lightning or another cause. While during a lightning storm it is best to unplug, most of us do not. In the event of a surge your equipment can get destroyed.

2. Do not turn off your computer with the power switch. Shut your computer down by going into the start Menu and select the "Shut Down" option.  The only exceptions are if you computer freezes and does not recover after 10-15mins tops and after selecting the "Shut Down" option and the computer is still on 10 minutes later. Using the power switch can result in lost data or windows files. The computer needs to go through a sequence of things in order to properly shut down.

3. Backing up your data is a very inexpensive insurance policy in the event of a hard drive or other computer failure to minimize any data loss. A study by Symantec indicated that 80% of computer users do not have backup software installed on their computer. I will post how to create a back up file or disk in the future.

4. Less and less computers these days come with a recovery disk. Perform a Recovery Disk Creation as soon as you can. I will post on how to perform this as well later on.

5. Anti virus software and anti spyware are a must. Microsoft Security Essentials is a good free program. If you are purchasing an internet security program, Norton Security Suite is a good one. I use this one on all my pc's. There is also freeware programs that are just as good.

6. If you have a wireless internet connection, it MUST be password protected. An open connection enables outsiders to access your internet service. Personal information of yours is compromised. You never know who is in your neighborhood that is pretty high tech savvy with computers, In addition, any illegal activity done on your internet connection is traced to you.

7. DO NOT give out information on the internet or otherwise when you are solicited for it. You may get an email along the lines of "there is an issue with your account. Please supply (your password, social security number, date of birth, etc)." Most sites have a policy where they will NEVER ask you for personal information online. When in doubt, call the bank or other financial institution in question. Also avoid scams where you have to pay money to get money.

8 .I am guilty of this one but keep food and drink away from computer, mouse, keyboard and any other electronic device. Crumbs, soda and juice spills can cause sticky keys. Liquids on or in electronic devices can ruin them.

9. And last, when using a public computer make sure you log off your email accounts and any other site you have been to that required you to log in using a user name and/or password. On more than one occasion I have accessed a public computer and noticed that the previous user did not log out of their email account. Your email account is open to that person and at that point belongs totally to them. They can if they wish send nasty messages to a friend, significant other, etc. I've thought about doing this each time I saw it just to teach them a lesson but needless to say I have self control.

10. By following the above tips, you will make your computer safer to use and less likely to breakdown. You also will be using the internet in a safer manner.
